Amy Honey
Amy Honey, An Overview:
With her distinctive markings and gregarious social behaviour, the warm-blooded female Amy Honey is a rare and entertaining singer/songwriter (commonly known as Ladyrocker).
She began her life cycle in West Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia, at the edge of the Atlantic Maritime ecozone, and traversed the Canadian Shield to nest in the wilds of East Vancouver near the watering hole known as Red Cat Records, lovingly hatched by Amy Honey and her mate, Andrew.
A wild and unpredictable migration, it is the comforting chaos that still compels her. The Amy Honey is driven by a biological imperative - a manic/ecstatic quest to mesh old and new; magic and rationality; afghans and asphalt.
Tips for Recognizing the Amy Honey in the Wild:
Plumage - Use of polka dots has been known to frighten away predators, and her subcutaneous antennae allow her to forage for musical victuals with an accuracy bordering on a GPS device.
Behaviour - A musical omnivore, the Amy Honey's healthy diet is reflected in a similarly robust range of compositions and performances. Like swirling a hand through a pool of plankton, merely brushing past the Amy Honey may result in organically produced sounds ranging from the melodious to the metallic. |
Habitat - Seek the Amy Honey in the pockets of sonic mutualism around the basements and jam spaces of Vancouver and Victoria's dizzyingly complex music scene, and stay alert for sightings of the Amy Honey throughout North America and Europe in 2007/08.
Careful observation and attentive listening to the sounds of Pioneer Woman will reveal appearances by the great lowland Tolan McNeil, the full-throated Carolyn Mark, the iridescent "Great Aunt Ida" Nilson, the fiddle-winged Diona Davis (Po' Girl), the flying-fingered Grayson Walker (Frog Eyes), the trans-migratory Gregory "Goose" Macdonald (Sloan), the red-plumed Keith Rose (Royal Grand Prix) and the broken-beatmaking Calvin Dick (Neckbeard). Prior recordings have featured the polytympanic Garth Johnson and the knob-twiddling Scott Henderson, and in recent years the Amy Honey has been spotted soaring in the flight path of Mr. Airplane Man, the peachvelvet butterfly Feist and the raggedly melodious Howe Gelb.
Recommended Approach -
1) Forego soothing calls. Hooting, clapping and goat's horns gestures are some of the traditional greetings for the Ladyrocker.
2) Brandish shiny objects - particularly good are CDs of fresh underground music, woodsy bottles of red wine and talismans from recent DIY/DWYW efforts.
3) Grip firmly. The Amy Honey abhors a limp handshake.
