Meatdraw (Live Review)
Saturday April 21 at The Project
OK, here’s my opening cliche: Meatdraw is so awesome! Cue screaming groupies. No, to put it simply, this countrified rock-oompah-noise
experience is very listenable, very danceable and very good. I caught their performance for the Self Righteous Records show at The Project
and found myself agreeing with the heckler who shouted “you guys are tight! Tiiiight! Did you just get back from tour or something?” The band has, in fact, recently returned from a hike to Edmonton and back, and from the looks of it, they’re ready for an even bigger tour. But patience, folks - we’re lucky to have them back at home. With close ties to Hank and Lily (the latter also being in the group) and Carolyn Mark, Meatdraw fulfilled the need for that old hymn feeling with male and female chorus vocals, while giving the audience that bumpy, driving-down-a-dirt-road-in-a-jalopy effect. When they broke into I Don’t Want to Be Your Ghost, also a video directed by Scott Amos of oilyfilms.com, the whole room shifted - the the dynamism of the Meat is infectiously fun and everyone wants to dance. And yes, that is a good thing. The band’s recent self-titled debut on Self Righteous is a lovely romp through their meat-filled junkyard of clunky instruments like trumpets and bicycle wheels. Hooray! If you missed out on this show, check them out when they play April 28th at the Vincat Mini-fest and at Logan’s on May 4th with the Pickles and Victoria, Victoria. - Kirsten Wright - Metropolatin Magazine
