Cavalcade Of The Scars Vol. 2
Various Artists (SRR008)
It has been two years since the release of the highly acclaimed Cavalcade Of The Scars compilation which received great praise throughout Canada and even became the most played Canadian album of 2006 at Victoria’s own CFUV. Since the release Self Righteous Records cemented their place in the Canadian music scene delivering some of the best music Victoria has to offer including CDs from Meatdraw, The Lonesome Valley Singers, The Himalayan Bear and Amy Honey. This year we’ve decided to start the New Year off right with a brand new compilation, and while compilations are really nothing new – this one is sure to stand apart from anything ever done in Victoria (or Canada for that matter).

This year’s collection not only boasts some of Victoria’s most amazing talents, it also pays homage to artists of the past to the present. This year, every band featured on the compilation will be covering their inspirations, their favorites and their peers – all derived out of Victoria BC.

Cavalcade Of The Scars Vol. 1
Self Righteous Records is proud to release a collection of songs from twenty of Victoria British Columbia's best indie artists and bands. Chet, David P. Smith, Carolyn Mark, Tolan McNeil, Hank Pine & Lily Fawn are only a handful of those who have all recorded tracks to be featured on 'Cavalcade of the Scars', helping to make this compilation the most uncompromising and diverse collection of Canadian artists to date. Cavalcade Of The Scars, which was the #2 most played album on CFUV for 2006 is a broad and intriguing album sure to urge it's listeners to "dust off my boots, buy some cheap whiskey and hop the first train (or, you know, boat) to Victoria. (Vue Weekly)"
"Cavalcade is an ode in its own right—a warm-hearted tribute to some of the city’s most accomplished musicians, and a great way for curious audiences to sample the Island’s sexiest exports." - The Martlet |

“Victoria is located at the bottom of a small Canadian island,” claim the liner notes that come with this collection of mostly folksy, occasionally alt-country-esque ditties by such Garden City luminaries as Chet, Carolyn Mark, Hank & Lily and the Switchblade Valentines. “It’s a place where artists are sheltered in some ways and incestuous in others,” it continues. “This may be perhaps their most endearing quality.”
Indeed. For all the bitching Edmonton musicians do about how claustrophobically stifling the insular nature of our local scene is, Cavalcade of the Scars shows that, at least in the case of Victoria, this kind of artistic incest can lead to some amazingly beautiful musical moments. Witness Dante Decaro (of the decidedly non-folk Hot Hot Heat and Wolf Parade) playing an authentic, irony-free, foot-stomping country rag, appearing on the same album as the surprisingly catchy middle-aged folkies Children of Celebrities. Other highlights include Hearse’s “Bonnie Parker,” a dark, accordion-fueled torch song, and Hank & Lily’s bluesy, trash-rock ode “David Hasselhoff.” Granted, I don’t really know a whole lot about this type of music, but after even a cursory listen to Cavalcade, I’m just about ready to dust off my boots, buy some cheap whiskey and hop the first train (or, you know, boat) to Victoria." 4/5 —Ross Moroz

When most people think about west coast Canadian music their minds tend to focus in on the strong Vancouver music scene. But just across the channel Victoria's music community is flourishing. Self Righteous Records decided to showcase some of the island city's talent in a 20 track compilation album featuring an exclusive selection of Victoria based bands and musicians.
Some of the album's highlights include the album opener "Your Element" by Chet which oddly enough was recorded in Vancouver's Hive Studio. The sound wanders through a soundscape of reverberated guitar and droned out bass intertwined with the whimsical vocal style of Ryan Beattie. Hank Pine and Lily Fawn, now simply known as Hank and Lily put the album in gear with their humorous pop hit about Bay Watch television star, David Hasselhoff. The Switchblade Valentines change the pace with a blazing rock track titled "My Baby", but Carolyn Mark steals the show with "Pink Moon and All the Ladies" proving that she is the true singer songwriting queen of the island.
The album is a wonderful compilation of Victoria based artists, giving listeners a chance to delve into the islands rich and eclectic music community. I only wish that every Canadian city was as organized as to put out such an album. In doing so Self Righteous Records has exposed listeners to artists they otherwise might have never gotten to hear.

Ever stop to think just how lucky we are to have Victoria so close by? It's like the Galapagos Islands... a whole separate band ecosystem where everything kind of evolves on it's own. Consequently, some truly amazing bands come from Victoria... and the bright lights at Self Righteous Records and Brand X Media have put together a fantastic compilation CD featuring some of the great quality and variety available in that town. The somewhat familiar and the completely unfamiliar stand shoulder to shoulder gazing with purpose towards a new and booze filled tomorrow. Featuring tracks by Tolan McNeil, Hank Pine & Lily Fawn, Chet, Carolyn Mark, The Switchblade Valentine,, David P. Smith and many more.
