The Himalayan Bear

It's a party, and the house is full of various people. A man who has consumed an excessive level of alcohol runs down a short flight of porch stairs one Boxing Day evening. He gradually makes his way to a a hedge and throws up. As his hands press to the ground and his spine contorts sparsely ridding himself of the poison in his body he is joined by Ryan Beattie. Driven by empathy and with no means to help his friend, Ryan does what he can; he strums his ukulele and serenades him under a moon lit sky. Songs are sung and as they reach earshot of the party-goers inside - one by one they slowly herd themselves out to the front yard. Eventually the sick man on the ground is surrounded as people slowly dance around his body to a ukulele and the falsetto voice of Ryan Beattie, AKA The Himalayan Bear. This one true life scenario is a simple dichotomy of what The Himalayan Bear's music conjures up in the mind. His music is as heart wrenching as it is poignantly laden with a raw yet yeilded intensity rarely discovered.
Ryan Beattie, better known as the frontman of Vancouver Island's Chet, and guitarist for Frog Eyes has recently completed his second full length album under the moniker of The Himalayan Bear. '...Attacks The Brilliant Air' is the follow up album to his 2006 release 'Lo Lonesome Island'. This time around The Himalayan Bear has dropped the ukulele and Hawaiian themes and has traded them in for the bare bones necessities of reverb and heart-strings. Recorded throughout 2006-2007 at Second Story Books (RIP) by Myke Hall '...Attacks The Brilliant Air' is a masterfully executed album that illustrates Beattie's raw poetic songwriting matched only by his intense level of musical ingenuity.

Accompanied by the likes of Grayson Walker (Godspeed You Black Emporer/Frog Eyes), Hank Pine (Hank & Lily), Carolyn Mark, Issac Flagg (Chet), Colin Mckill (Pequod/Fine Options) among others, 'Attacks The Brilliant Air' is a true testament of the battle between the debaucherous heart and the fevered mind. With songs ranging from stories of lost teenage love to sweeping murder ballads, Ryan Beattie once again exhibits his unbridled ability to take his listeners to an emotional breaking point only to release his lyrical grip and lead them to another region of consciousness through a song by song lineage that is as beautiful as it is merciless.
